News and Updates Patagonia Project Volunteer Trail Maintenance: March 2006 Itinerary 3/18: Depart US 3/19: Arrive Santiago in the morning. Fly from Santiago to Punta Arenas (approx. 3 hrs), then take a 3.5 hour bus to Puerto Natales, spend the night in Puerto Natales. Dinner with the group in Puerto Natales. 3/20: Early departure for the park. The bus takes about two hours, and we will have the opportunity to stop along the way to take pictures and see the gorgeous landscape. Once we arrive in the park, we will continue to stop and take pictures along the way. To reach our lodging (called a “refugio” in Spanish), we must take a short catamaran trip across one of the park’s many lakes. Weather permitting, this trip will offer amazing views of the park. Each room in the refugio has between 6 and 9 beds (about 4 bunk beds) so you will share your room with others. This is a great way to get to know the people on the trip. The refugio where we will be staying provides breakfast and dinner (we usually eat lunch out on the trail). The refugio also has running water, showers, etc. 3/21-3/28: During this period, we will be staying at the refugio and spending our days working on the trails. Usually our days run from about 9- 4 p.m. with about an hour for lunch. Some people choose to work more than this, and we think that is great! You will also have approximately 2 days off during this period to enjoy the rest of the park. The scenery in Torres is unbelievably beautiful! 3/29: At about noon, we will leave the park, enjoying another opportunity to take pictures as we cross back over the lake. We will drive to Puerto Natales that night and enjoy a farewell dinner there. 3/30: Bus from Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, flight to Santiago. Spend the day and evening in Santiago. You will have the opportunity to tour the city, shop, and dine at one of Santiago's many restaurants. 3/31: Leave Santiago 4/1: Arrive in US This itinerary is subject to minor changes. |
